The face behind Carved in Wood

Hi, I'm Francesca, mum to two wonderful children and the person behind Carved in Wood.

I've enjoyed a fantastic career in landscape and urban design over the years, but with work often taking me away from home and involving lots of travelling, I reached a point where I wanted to make a change. I wanted to spend more time at home with my children, while still doing something creative that I genuinely loved.

I've always had a real appreciation for wood — its natural beauty, character, textures and the fact that no two pieces are ever quite the same. I even found myself collecting interesting bits of timber, not really knowing what I was going to do with them!

Then one day, an idea came to me. What if I could combine my love of wood with all the design and technical skills I'd developed throughout my career?

And that's how Carved in Wood was born!

What started as a little idea has grown into something I absolutely love doing. I'm lucky enough to head out to my workshop each day and spend my time creating beautiful, individual pieces from natural timber.

Sustainability is something that's really close to my heart. I'm very conscious of our environment and the importance of making the most of our natural resources. All my timber is locally sourced, and wherever possible, I love to repurpose wood and give it a new lease of life. There's something particularly special about taking a piece of timber that might otherwise have been overlooked and turning it into something beautiful that can be treasured for years to come.

One of my favourite parts of the process is choosing just the right piece of wood for each project, taking into account its grain, colour and character. I also really enjoy getting to know my customers, listening to their ideas and working together to create something truly personal.

Whether it's a special gift, a much-loved pet captured in wood, a house sign or a meaningful keepsake, every piece has its own story, and I take real pride in bringing those stories to life.

For me, Carved in Wood is about so much more than simply making things. It's about celebrating the natural beauty of wood, respecting the environment and creating something meaningful, personal and made to be treasured.
